Help talk:Good Editing Practices

I think this should be removed: Know your wikimarkup! There are plenty of good reasons to learn it; the most important of which involves lowering the chance that you'll get flamed by ornery members of the wiki.

because:

  • What it says is the most important reason to know wikimarkup is actually not a very good reason for doing anything, and
  • Beyond the basics, wikimarkup isn't all that important to know. You can contribute useful information to the wiki without knowing that much of the technical side of things. It's rare that editors have to create tables and the like, and even if they do the information for that specific task is readily available. There's no need to memorise it.--Toejam 20:58, 5 June 2006 (BST)
    • What do you think of the revised version? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 02:11, 8 June 2006 (BST)
      • I much prefer it now.--Toejam 12:56, 8 June 2006 (BST)
        • Any reason that you reverted part of it again, then? Before deleting content, ask here. I've had to report you to vandal banning. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 18:55, 8 June 2006 (BST)
          • Actually, I changed it and then said 'I much prefer it now', not the other way around.--Toejam 23:44, 13 June 2006 (BST)
            • If the phrasing still bothers you, feel free to propose a revised version here. The thing is, however, that if you plan to do formatting, you really do need to know wikimarkup, and if you don't use wikimarkup, you probably will be snapped at by somebody. Is that good? Not necessary. But it's true. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 23:21, 14 June 2006 (BST)
              • I don't know if I need to say this, but I'm going to just in case: I don't want there to be any bad blood or hostility between us. I think we both want the wiki to be as good as it can be, and edit wars and the like would just get in the way. In future, I'll try to communicate better the reasons why I'm making the edits I'm making. Maybe I'm imagining a problem where there is none, but I just wanted to be sure that in the future, the two of us won't be on bad terms with each other. --Toejam 02:30, 21 June 2006 (BST)
                • I think you're right that we're both interested in improving the wiki, and I'd be glad to put our brief conflict behind me; no bad blood on my end. –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 04:21, 21 June 2006 (BST)
                  • And none on mine. I'm very pleased this we've resolved this so amicably.--Toejam 17:51, 21 June 2006 (BST)
                    • An idea: what if the phrasing went something more along the lines of "Furthermore, many wiki users have a strong preference for wikimarkup over HTML"? –Bob Hammero ModB'cratTA 19:49, 23 June 2006 (BST)
